New SMS regulations that were implemented yesterday caused widespread OTP issues, leading to multiple users tweeting about not being able to complete bank transactions. A telecom industry insider told Gadgets360 that the disruption was caused by operators implementing the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) process, as mandated by TRAI, India's telecom regulatory body. DLT is a block-chain based registration system that is aimed to decrease SMS spam for users. Many users faced problems receving OTPs for bank transactions, ordering food, or even registering for the Coronavirus vaccine. No banks or telecom companies have released a statement about the disruption yet, and it is not clear how long it will continue.
