Georgian chess legend Nona Gaprindashvili has filed a $5 million defamation suit against Netflix for its hit show 'The Queen's Gambit'.
The Chess legend said that her depiction in the show 'The Queen's Gambit' was 'sexist and belittling'.
The chess player has also accused Netflix of distorting her achievements in the fictional series.
Nona Gaprindashvili was the first woman to be awarded the FIDE title Grandmaster. She sued Netflix, after a line on the show mentioned her by name and said she had 'never faced men'.
The 80-year-old said that the show falsely suggested that the former female world champion never played competitive chess with men, even after she competed against dozens of top male players, beating 28 of them.
She has demanded that the line be removed from the show.
However, in a statement to the Times, Netflix said that it has the utmost respect for Gaprindashvili and her illustrious career, but they believe this claim has no merit and will vigorously defend the case.
Based on a 1983 novel of the same name, 'The Queen's Gambit' focuses on the rise of fictional chess player Beth Harmon. In the show, Harmon is raised in an orphanage and eventually beats Russia’s finest players in 1960d Moscow, at the height of the Cold War.
