In an extraordinary feat, a team of Nepalese climbers have successfully climbed the K2 in the winter, becoming the first ones to do so.

10 sherpas including Nirmal Purja conquered the K2 peak in Pakistan on Saturday afternoon, scripting history. Ascent of the peak in winter is considered almost impossible because of the weather conditions and geographical difficulties.

On the same day however, a Spanish mountaineer, Sergi Mingote passed away after falling from the peak.

K2, which is only 200m shorter than Everest, is part of the Karakoram Range that straddles the Pakistan-China border.
