Mount Everest is set to witness its busiest year ever. According to the authoritative Himalayan Database, since the first scaling of the world's highest peak, 4000 climbers have reached atop the Everest. This is prompting concerns about overcrowding and safety since the mountain is opening up to more people leading to potential shortages of oxygen tanks, and increased risk of frostbite and even death. Nepal currently grants permits to all those who apply and are willing to pay over 7 lakhs to scale the nearly 9000 metres tall peak. According to the tourism department, the government has already handed out 378 climbing permits this year.
