Meet Justice Nagarathna, who could be first woman Chief Justice of India

Justice BV Nagarathna, who is currently a judge in the Karnataka High court, wil now move to the Supreme Court and is in line to become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027. The government cleared her for appointment after SC collegium recommendation.

Justice Nagarathna could become CJI for just over a month — from September 25 to October 29, 2027

Justice Nagarathna is among the three women judges whose names have been cleared.

Born on October 30, 1962, Justice Nagarathna is the daughter of former CJI ES Venkataramiah.

She enrolled as an advocate on October 28, 1987 at Bangalore and practiced in the field pertaining to “constitution, commerce, insurance and service, etc”.

She was appointed as an additional judge in the Karnataka High Court in February 2008. 

In 2012, Justice Nagarathna delivered a crucial judgment, on the need to regulate electronic media.

In her judgement she wrote, "While truthful dissemination of information is an essential requirement of any broadcasting channel, sensationalism in the form of ‘Breaking News’, ‘Flash News’ or in any other form must be curbed"
