The World Health Organization (WHO) is reportedly planning to declare artificial sweetener aspartame, commonly used in soft drinks like Diet Coke, as a potential carcinogen.

Aspartame has long been a subject of debate regarding safety, and such an announcement by the WHO's cancer research agency would add further weight to the concerns.

Aspartame has been found to be a possible carcinogen, according to sources within WHO's cancer research arm quoted by news agency Reuters. The agency is conducting an in-depth review of the available scientific evidence and is expected to release an official statement in the near future.

The report has sparked concerns among consumers and the soft drink industry, as the use of aspartame is prevalent in many popular diet beverages.
