Social media influencers on TikTok are refering to a new term "nose blindness" as the phenomenon where you're exposed to a scent so frequently that you no longer notice it, even in cases like your own breath.

What is nose blindness?

Though the term has always been there, it's picking up now among the younger generation who are sharing funny or insightful posts about nose blindness, often using it as a springboard to discuss hygiene, perfume choices, or living with roommates and pets.

This is a short-term adjustment that helps us tune out constant smells—whether pleasant or unpleasant—like deodorant or perfume.
While most individuals can detect temporary bad breath, they might become unable to notice persistent bad breath caused by issues like dental disease, sinus infections, or gastrointestinal problems that bring odours up from the stomach.

Nose blindness, or olfactory adaptation, refers to the phenomenon where you become so accustomed to a certain smell that you no longer notice it. This can happen with common scents like perfume, deodorant, or even unpleasant odors like bad breath. Essentially, when you're exposed to a scent for an extended period, your brain filters it out to prevent sensory overload, allowing you to focus on new and potentially more important smells.

Why it's trending on social media?

Relatable Content: Many people can relate to experiences of not noticing their own body odors, home smells, or bad breath, which makes it a popular topic for humor and memes.

TikTok and Social Experiments: Creators on platforms like TikTok are sharing funny or insightful posts about nose blindness, often using it as a springboard to discuss hygiene, perfume choices, or living with roommates and pets.

Health and Self-awareness: With increased focus on wellness and hygiene, people are becoming more aware of conditions like chronic bad breath, which they may not notice due to nose blindness. This has sparked discussions around dental health and the use of products to mitigate bad smells.

Meme Culture: It's often joked about in memes, especially in relation to strong colognes, bad breath, or the excessive use of air fresheners. These humorous takes make it a trendy topic, circulating quickly across social media platforms.
