Study suggests peppermint oil may help reduce pain, improve sleep and enhance memory

According to a study published in the journal BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care, peppermint oil aromatherapy has incredible potential for relieving pain, especially for patients who go through open heart surgery. 

The study also found that peppermint oil treatment improves patients’ sleep quality and enhances memory. 

For the findings, researchers divided the participants into two groups, the first group was given 0.1 ml of 10 per cent peppermint oil, while the second received 10 ml of distilled water. 

The team found that the average pain severity score in the aromatherapy group was 3.22, compared to 4.56 in the comparison group. Furthermore, sleep quality scores revealed a marked improvement in the aromatherapy group.

Previous studies have also mentioned the relaxing properties of peppermint essential oil.
