Are you hooked to social media and can’t resist using your phone? Well, think twice as increased screen time might affect your mental health.
A study published in the Affective Disorders Journal found that young adults who are addicted to social media platforms are more likely to develop depression.
For the study, researchers collected data of more than 1,000 adults aged between 18 to 30. Depression and personality traits were evaluated with a questionnaire and social media usage was calculated by asking individuals how much time they spent on their phones.
The team observed that social comparison enhances negative feelings about oneself and others, which explains how the risk of depression increases with increased social media use. Apart from this, consuming negative content online and reduced in-person interactions can also increase the risk of depression among young adults.
