The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is here to save you with another purity test and this time it’s for the most common summer staple, curd.

As per FSSAI, curd or dahi can be adulterated with vegetable oil to make it thicker and sweeter. The adulterated curd contains fatty acids which may increase the risk of heart diseases and cholesterol. So, if you are not preparing dahi at home, it's best to conduct an adulteration test before consumption.

Here’s how to detect adulteration in curd:

  • Take 1 teaspoon of curd in a test tube
  • Now, add 10 drops of hydrochloric acid
  • Mix up the contents by shaking the test tube gently
  • The presence of vegetable oil in the curd will turn the mixture red
