Saudi Arabia marks a major milestone, entering Miss Universe for the first time. Rumy Alqahtani is set to represent the Kingdom in the global event that will be held in Mexico on September 18.
‘I am honored to participate in the Miss Universe 2024 competition. This marks the first participation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the Miss Universe pageant,’ the Riyadh-born model and content creator wrote in her post on March 25.
Alqahtani follows Bahrain’s Lujane Yacoub, who made history as the first Gulf woman to join Miss Universe last year.
Rumy Alqahtani is celebrated as a symbol of empowerment for Saudi women. Having represented Saudi Arabia in various international contests like Miss Asia, Miss Arab Peace, and Miss Europe, her participation marks a significant milestone.
In addition to being crowned Miss Saudi Arabia, Rumy Alqahtani holds prestigious titles like Miss Middle East (Saudi Arabia), Miss Arab World Peace 2021, and Miss Woman (Saudi Arabia). With a million followers on Instagram and thousands more across other platforms, she is fluent in English, French, and Arabic, holding a Bachelor’s degree in dentistry.
This historic step mirrors Saudi Arabia’s continual transformation under the guidance of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud.
Referred to as MBS, the 38-year-old de facto ruler has led transformative changes in Saudi Arabia since assuming the position of crown prince in June 2017. Under his leadership, the ambitious ‘Vision 2030’ plan has been implemented, targeting social and economic reforms. Women are now allowed to drive, attend public events, concerts, and acquire passports without male guardian consent. Moreover, the Kingdom has lifted the ban on cinemas and promoted mixed-gender gatherings, signifying a substantial departure from traditional norms.
