The decline in muscle mass can lead to a variety of health problems and also shorten lifespan. In type-2 diabetes, the muscle mass is considerably reduced, and the ability to absorb glucose is also impaired. In a new study conducted at Sweden’s Lund University, scientists have revealed the reason behind weaker skeletal muscles amongst type-2 diabetic people.
One key protein called VPS39 is not produced enough in their body, which is why the muscle tissues degenerate. The protein is part of the molecular machinery that cells use to regenerate themselves.

According to the new research, the gene that makes this protein is less active in the muscle cells of people with type-2 diabetes. Researchers are undergoing further studies to develop new treatments for this disorder, as currently, there is no drug available to cure muscle mass decline.
