Kesavananda Bharati, a petitioner in the historic case that led to the Supreme Court evolving the doctrine of basic structure of the Constitution, has died. The 79-year old head of the Edneer Mutt in Kerala's Kasargod died due to age related ailments on Sunday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that the seer deeply attached to the Constitution and he will be remembered for his service to the community and the downtrodden. Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu said that Bharati was a rare blend philosopher, classical singer and cultural icon. A case filed by him in 1970s led to a Supreme Court judgement that said that while Parliament had the powers to amend the Constitution, it can't change its basic structure.
