Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan has a plan to wipe out the practice of dowry in the southern state which has the highest literacy rate in India.
Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, who shared his plan with the vice chancellors of various universities in the state, believes that students should be asked to sign a bond, at the time of admission into colleges and before receiving their degrees, stating that they will not engage in the practice of dowry.

Coming out of the meeting with the VCs, Khan said universities cannot and should not allow dear degrees to be used as a license to increase the price of a bridegroom in the marriage market.
Asserting that such a bond won’t be extra-judicial as dowry is a punishable offence, Khan believes parents of the students must also sign a bond at the time of admission stating that they will not accept or give dowry. He said the provision could also be applied for appointments to posts in universities.
Khan indicated that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was enthusiastic about the proposed move.
