In an effort to become more inclusive, Japan Airlines (JAL) is dropping the phrase 'ladies and gentlemen' from its greeting announcements. The airline will switch to expressions like 'attention all passengers' and, 'welcome, everyone' starting October 1 on all flights and airports worldwide.
A JAL spokesperson told AFP that the Tokyo-based airline aims to abolish expressions that do not promote gender inclusivity.
JAL is the first Asian airline to adopt this practice. Before this, Air Canada also announced last year that they're making a switch from gender-specific to gender-neutral greetings including 'everybody.'
