West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called the killings of 4 people in CISF firing during polling on Saturday in Cooch Behar a genocide. She said it was a genocide because the central forces 'sprayed' bullets on the people. Banerjee said that according to the rules, security personnel are supposed to fire below the waist but instead bullets had the hit neck or the chest area of the victims.

She also slammed the poll panel's decision to ban entry of politicians in the district for 72 hours from Saturday and accused them of forming or changing the rules to benefit one party.
