Is India witnessing the beginning of the third wave of Covid-19 pandemic in India? Experts say yes.

India reported 42,625 new Covid-19 cases in last 24 hours, health ministry data showed on Wednesday morning. This is at least 12,000 cases more from Tuesday's tally of 30,549.

562 coronavirus deaths were also reported in the 24 hours period.

India has 410,353 active cases in the country, accounting for 1.28 per cent of the total cases seen so far. The active cases have increased by 5,395 in the last 24 hours

The 'R-Value' is inching up in eight states, the government said on Tuesday said, calling it a "significant problem". The government's remarks come amid concern over a third wave.

The government also said 44 districts across 12 states and Union Territories reported over 10% weekly Covid-19 positivity rate in the week ending 2 August.

In what has been a second concern for the authorities, the daily Covid-19 infections in India have started soaring again after a steady decline of nearly three months. At present, the spike is driven by states like Kerala, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh where the cases are increasing.
