These men standing outside Godhra sub-jail are convicts of Bilkis Bano's rape and murder of members of her family.

As soon as they were released, videos of them being honoured went viral on social media.

The 11 convicts were offered sweets with some of them being honoured and applied tilaks on their forehead.

In the violence following the 2002 Godhra incident, a pregnant Bilkis Bano and 4 other women members of her family had been gangraped.

The special CBI court on January 21, 2008, sentenced the eleven accused to life imprisonment on the charge of gang rape and murder of seven members of Bilkis Bano's family.

They were convicted on charges of conspiring to rape a pregnant woman, murder and unlawful assembly under the Indian Penal Code.

The special court acquitted seven other accused for want of evidence. One of the accused had died during the trial.
