A fashion show featuring students wearing burqas at a Muzaffarnagar college has sparked a debate, with a Muslim body urging the institution to apologise.
NDTV reported that the Jamiat Ulama objected to students walking the ramp in burqas and said that it is a piece of cloth to cover the body and not meant for fashion.
The college has however backed the students.
The controversy surrounding the Shri Ram College fashion show in Muzaffarnagar started after a video of the event went viral. The three-day event, named Fashion Splash, featured students showcasing both Western and traditional attire.
Jamiat Ulama's district convener Maulana Mukarram Qasmi has accused the college of targeting a religion and warned of legal action if it does not apologise.
Students who took part in the event said that they were trying to showcase 'unity in diversity' along with their creativity
