Thieves break open ATM, accidentally set cash worth over Rs 19 lakh on fire

A pack of thieves accidentally burned currency notes while trying to break open an ATM.

A Canara Bank ATM machine in Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara area was broke open by thieves using a gas cutter when they accidentally burned notes worth Rs 19 lakh. 

According to media reports, 2,965 currency notes of Rs 100 denomination, 1,911 notes of Rs 200 denomination and 2,573 notes of Rs 500 denominations amounting to Rs 19.65 lakh were in the ATM which was destroyed as thieves tried to open it with a gas cutter.

The police have registered a case for burglary and punishment for attempting to commit offences against the perpetrators.

A complaint registered by the private company responsible for the maintenance of the ATM kiosk said the incident took place between May 14-15. There was almost a week's delay between the theft and filing of the complaint, according to reports.
