Cotton candy has been banned in Tamil Nadu after tests revealed presence of cancer-causing chemicals.

The state government banned production and sale of the children's favourite after testing samples collected from beaches and other areas in Chennai.

The tests confirmed the presence of Rhodamine-B, an industrial dye, used as an artifical colouring agent in cotton candy.

The state has also made the use of Rhodamine-B as a food additive in manufacturing, packaging, import, sale of food or serving food containing the cancer-causing dye at weddings and other public events punishable under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
