Rare fossil found in MP actually decaying beehive imprints; researchers accept mistake

The University of Florida researchers who visited Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh, where a rare 550-million-year-old fossil Dickinsonia, a primitive marine animal was found recently, have said that reports of it being a fossil are incorrect.

They have confirmed it as a case of mistaken identity and that it is not a fossil, but a decayed imprint of a beehive.

After peer reviews, the researchers presented their findings in the Gondwana Research, a scientific journal, according to a report by The Print.

With this the age of the Bhimbetka formation is still an open question, some experts claim its less than 550 million years old, while others think is close to a billion years old.
