In a unique move, now prisoners in Punjab can spend some time with their spouses. The move will allow low-risk criminals to spend an hour or two with their partners in designated rooms.
Ludhiana's Central Jail, as per an Indian Express Report, began with the facility on October 4 with a view to strengthen marriages and eliminate imprisonment after-effects. While three more prisons- Central Jails in Amritsar and Fardikot and District Jail in Muktsar Sahib also launched the facility in September.
The conjugal visits will also be allowed at the Goindwal Sahib central jail, new district jail in Nabha and women's jail in Bathinda.
The facility, however, excludes high risk criminals including gangsters and those booked in sexuals offences.
To ensure transparency in the process, jail management has set good conduct criteria for the eligible inmates with priority to those having the longest stay in jails.
Punjab is reportedly the first ever state in the country to come up with conjugal visits for prisoners.
