Just hours after the recipients of the 2022 Padma Awards were announced, a controversy broke out.

This year, one of the nation's highest civilian honours has been conferred on leaders of Opposition parties like the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

However, CPI(M) leader and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has reportedly refused to accept the award. Bhattacharjee reportedly issued a statement saying, "I don't know anything about the Padma Bhushan Award. Nobody told me about it. If I have been awarded the Padma Bhushan, I would reject it."
