With the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party announcing candidates for 189 seats out of 224 in Karnataka on 11 April 2023, MP Tejasvi Surya was asked about lack of any candidates from the Muslim community.

Surya first said that more than 50 fresh faces have been given an opportunity, while veteran leaders have opted out of the electoral race. He added that this is unique to only the BJP.

When reporters continued to press on the Muslim question, Surya said that candidates are yet to be announced for many seats, and the party will "take a call".
