Days after British-Indian politician Rishi Sunak took charge as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a phone conversation with him.

Tweeting about the call on 27 October 2022, PM Modi said that he was "glad" to have spoken to Sunak. Modi congratulated Sunak on his elevation as the premier of the UK.

The Indian PM said that there was agreement to work together to further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. Modi said that he and Sunak also agreed on the importance of the early conclusion of a comprehensive and balanced free trade agreement (FTA).

In response, Sunak thanked Modi for his "kind words". The UK premier further said, "The UK and India share so much. I'm excited about what our two great democracies can achieve as we deepen our security, defence and economic partnership in the months & years ahead."

On 24 October, when it became clear that Sunak would be the next PM of the UK, PM Modi had tweeted a congratulatory message.

Tagging Sunak on the social media platform, PM Modi had said, "As you become UK PM, I look forward to working closely together on global issues, and implementing Roadmap 2030. Special Diwali wishes to the 'living bridge' of UK Indians, as we transform our historic ties into a modern partnership."
