Tragedy struck in Odisha's Balasore district when a vehicle carrying West Bengal's Howrah Uttar MLA Gautam Chowdhury and his family collided with a two-wheeler, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to another, police reported on Thursday.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Wednesday on National Highway 16, in the Jamjhadi area under the jurisdiction of Simulia Police Station, a senior officer informed.

The vehicle, which bore a West Bengal registration number, was en route from Puri to West Bengal when the collision took place, the officer added.

"The car with the MLA and his family on board struck the two-wheeler, and as a result, 56-year-old Radhakanta Lenka and one other person suffered injuries," stated the police officer.

They were rushed to the nearest Simulia hospital, where doctors pronounced Lenka dead upon arrival.

Simulia Police have since detained the driver, Amiya Singh Ray, and initiated a formal investigation into the accident.
