Priests attacked by mob outside Tripura ex-CM's ancestral house; shouted pro-CPI(M) slogans, says victim

A group of priests claimed that it was attacked by a mob outside the ancestral house of former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb.

The incident reportedly took place in Udaipur in Gomati district late at night on 3 January 2023. The priests had arrived at Deb's house to perform a 'yagya' in the annual 'Shraadh' ceremony for Deb's late father.

The assailants reportedly fled after locals came to the priests' rescue.

The attackers shouted that either CPI(M) will come to power in the state, or no one else will, victim Jitendra Kaushik told news agency ANI.

Following the incident, local residents held a protest, and some protestors also attacked shops believed to be owned by suspected assailants. Subsequently, police were deployed in large numbers in the area.

Sub Divisional Police Officer Nirupam Debbarma and Additional Superintendent of Police Debanjana Roy also rushed to the spot.
