A lion attacked and killed a 5-year-old child in Gujarat on May 2. The young girl was playing near a water tank in a village when the lion attacked her.

The wild cat dragged her for about half-a-kilometre towards the jungle. The girl's father chased the lion and managed to extract his daughter, but she succumbed to the injuries.

Later, the adult male lion was captured by forest officials. Four traps were set up in the area. When the lion was spotted, it was tranquilised, and shifted to an animal care centre in Sasan Gir.

The incident took place around 8 pm on May 2 in Kadaya village in Gujarat's Amreli district. The victim's father is a farm labourer from Rajasthan.

Gujarat is the only abode of Asiatic lions, with 674 of the wild cats residing in the state, as per a 2020 census.
