At a Republic Day function held at an RBI branch office in Chennai on Wednesday, a few officials allegedly remained seated while the Tamil anthem was being sung.

A video of the purported incident also went viral in which onlookers could be seen questioning the officials for not rising while the anthem was being sung. The officials had reportedly replied that the Madras High Court had said there was no need to do so.

A day after the incident, a Madras High Court advocate has filed a complaint against the officials for what he claimed was “disrespecting the anthem” on Thursday.

According to advocate G Rajesh, who filed an online complaint to the Greater Chennai Police, the officials misinterpreted the judgment of the High Court and the order issued by the Tamil Nadu government.

State cabinet ministers as well as leaders across political parties condemned the incident on social media.
