Days after taking over the Birbhum mob violence case, the Central Bureau of Investigation, or CBI, has named over 20 people as accused, as per reports. The Bengal police had named the same people as accused when it was investigating the case, as per an NDTV report.
The CBI also reportedly questioned Trinamool Congress party's block president Anarul Hossain. He was accused of aiding the murderous crowd, and his arrest was reportedly promised by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Around 20 people have been arrested so far, as per reports. The case relates to the murder of 8 people, including 2 children, by allegedly locking them inside and house and setting fire to it. The mob violence occurred after a local TMC leader was killed in an alleged crude bomb attack.
The case was handed over to CBI from the Bengal police by the Calcutta High Court.
The central agency is slated to submit a status report in the court by April 7.
Following uproar over the killings leading to a political storm, CM Banerjee had visited the spot of violence in Birbhum's Bogtui village. She had hinted at a conspiracy by saying that there was "something big" behind the incident.
