A Kolkata court is set to announce the sentencing of Sanjay Roy on Monday, convicted of the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The crime, which occurred on August 9, 2024, sparked widespread outrage and protests.

Roy, a former civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10, a day after the 31-year-old doctor’s body was discovered in the hospital seminar room. He was convicted of both rape and murder under Sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Section 64 prescribes a minimum sentence of 10 years for rape, which can extend to life imprisonment. Section 66 stipulates a punishment ranging from 20 years to life or death for causing death or a persistent vegetative state. Section 103(1) carries a death sentence or life imprisonment for murder.

The case gained national attention, and the investigation was transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court. The judge’s 160-page verdict includes criticism of the police and hospital authorities.

Roy, who had claimed he was framed, will make a final statement at 12:30 pm before the court delivers its sentence. The family of the deceased doctor expressed their gratitude to the court for delivering justice.
