Following a controversy over an order containing new punishments for various types of acts at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, the administration withdrew the directive on 2 March 2023.

Vice Chancellor Satishree Pandit claimed that she was unaware of the document being prepared and released.

The now-withdrawn rules concerned acts like protests, violence, and forgery, with penalties ranging from fines of ₹5,000 to ₹50,000, and cancellation of admission, or rustication.

Many students and teachers had called the order draconian.
