The Supreme Court on January 16 allowed the cleaning of "wazukhana" of the Gyanvapi mosque which located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi.

The court said the cleaning must be done under the supervision of the district administration.

In 2022, the Hindu side had claimed to have found a "Shivling" in the wazukhana during a court-mandated survey. Following the claims, the area was sealed off by an order of the top court.

'Wazukhana' is the reservoir where Muslim devotees perform ablutions before offering namaz.
