A 45-year-old woman woke up from a coma after 11 years in a mental institute in Kolkata. Geeta Baria, originally from Panchmahal in Gujarat, had disappeared in 2013.

Her family residing in the remote village of Bhamaiyya had lost hope of her return, but received a call from Kolkata’s Pavlov Institute, informing them of Geeta's medical condition and recovery. She had recalled details of her family and reached out to them with the help of the institute and the police.

The Panchmahal district police has stepped in to help the family travel to Kolkata to bring back Geeta to Bhamaiyya, where her children and extended family stay.

Panchmahal SP Himnanshu Solanki told The Indian Express, “The hospital contacted the police and the police verified the details of the village and the family. When we could contact the family, the doctors had Geeta video call her family. They recognised each other.”

“Geeta had gone missing in 2013 while the family was attending a wedding. We are yet to ascertain how she landed in Kolkata and what happened during these years,” he added.
