Gujarat Govt forms panel to assess Uniform Civil Code, report expected in 45 days

The Gujarat government has constituted a five-member committee led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai to evaluate the need for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state and draft a proposed bill. The panel will submit its report within 45 days.

 
In a major step toward implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the Gujarat government on Tuesday announced the formation of a high-level committee to assess its feasibility and draft a bill for its introduction.

• The five-member panel, chaired by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, includes retired IAS officer CL Meena, advocate RC Kodekar, educationist Daxesh Thakar, and social worker Gita Shroff.
• The committee will present its report within 45 days, after which the state government will decide on its implementation.
• Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel emphasized that the panel’s findings would help shape legal reforms aimed at bringing uniformity in personal laws across different communities.

The move aligns with the BJP-led government’s broader push for UCC, which aims to replace religion-based personal laws with a common legal framework for all citizens.
