Gitanjali Aiyar, popular Doordarshan anchor, dies

Gitanjali Aiyar, one of the first English news presenters of the country, died on Wednesday. She joined Doordarshan in 1971 and presented news on the channel for over 30 years.  

She won the best anchor award four times in her career and was also presented with the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women in 1989. Aiyar also presented a weekly song request show on All India Radio

Gitanjali Aiyar graduated from Kolkata's Loreto College with a degree in English and also held a diploma from the National School of Drama.
