Efforts on to rescue 40 workers trapped in Uttarkashi tunnel collapse

Efforts are underway to rescue at least 40 workers who were trapped after the Silkyara Tunnel located on Uttarkashi-Yamnotri road collapsed on November 12.

The SDRF team is leading the rescue operation. A personnel engaged in the rescue work said that their team is removing the debris using excavators and other heavy machines.

"The work of mucking is underway. Mucking is being done with the loader & excavator...Approximately 30-35 meters part of the tunnel has been broken. The incident happened around 5:30 am. We have information of around 40-45 people being trapped. Everyone is safe...," said Mritunjay Kumar, loader operator.

An official said that initially, they were not able to communicate with those trapped, however, they later managed to make contact.
