The Indian government summoned a senior British diplomat on the night of 19 March 2023, following the pulling down of the Indian tricolour at the Indian High Commission in London by alleged pro-Khalistan protestors.

In a strongly-worded statement, the government said that India finds "unacceptable" the indifference of the UK government on the security of Indian diplomatic premises and personnel in the UK. An explanation was sought over the lack of security.

The Indian government called British Deputy High Commissioner Christina Scott as High Commissioner Alex Ellis was not in Delhi, according to sources quoted by news agency PTI.
