As heavy rains triggered floods, the residents of Tamil Nadu were forced to wade through knee-deep waters as they tried to carry on with their daily activities.

Many people have shifted to temporary shelters after the rains destroyed their homes and properties.

"We don't have food, there's no place to live, nowhere to sleep," a Chennai resident said.

At least 14 people have died in the state of Tamil Nadu due to heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The meteorological department renewed a severe rainfall alert for Tamil Nadu and other provinces on Thursday for the coming days as a tropical depression over southwest Bay of Bengal continued to move land.

Heavy rain in southern India is not uncommon during the late monsoon season, but severe weather events like the floods in Chennai are becoming more frequent as a result of global warming.
