England's wait for their first major football trophy since 1966 got longer as Italy beat them 3-2 on penalties in Euro 2020 final to clinch European football's ultimate title on Sunday night at the Wembley stadium.
It seemed that England's 55-year long wait would finally end when Luke Shaw gave them a perfect start with a goal in just the 2nd minute. But Leonardo Bonucci equalised in the 67th minute, becoming the oldest player ever to score in a European Championship final. Extra time too failed to produce a winner as the game went into penalty shootouts and Gianluigi Donnarumma turned out to be the hero. The Italian goalkeeper made 2 saves as 3 English players missed penalties.
The Three Lions have won just 22% of their major tournament shootouts, the lowest ratio of any European nation to have been involved in 3 or more. On the other hand, by winning their 2nd Euro title, The Azzurri extended its unbeaten streak to 34 games.
