The Union health ministry on Sunday, in a letter to the Uttarakhand chief secretary, flagged the chances of a jump in Covid-19 cases during the Kumbh Mela.
The letter highlighted the concerns raised by a high-level central team about the need for stringent measures to control the spread of the disease.
The letter mentioned that pilgrims expected to visit Haridwar for Kumbh Mela could also be from the 12 states that have shown a surge in coronavirus cases in the past few weeks.
The ministry told the state that the daily testing numbers reported in Haridwar are not enough to effectively offset a huge number of expected pilgrim footfall.
