A Greenpeace investigation has said that contaminated water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, contains a radioactive substance that has the potential to damage human DNA.
Environmental groups claim that 1.23 million tons of water stored in more than a thousand tanks in the plant contain dangerous levels of a radioactive isotope carbon-14, in addition to quantities of tritium that have already been widely reported.
The report comes as Japanese media reports say that the government was planning to give its approval to release the water into the Pacific ocean.
