The global coronavirus caseload has topped 202.6 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 4.29 million and vaccinations soared to over 4.33 billion, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Here's a quick look at the global Covid updates:
1. The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths. New coronavirus cases in the U.S. surged to the highest weekly level since early February. New coronavirus cases in the U.S. rose to 761,216 in the week ended Sunday, while deaths in the US rise by 49 to to 3,486, the biggest weekly increase since December. The U.S. CDC has raised the travel advisory for France and Israel to the highest level.
2. Canada has extended restrictions on direct flights from India till September 21. The ban was first imposed on April 22 and has already been rolled over several times. It is the fifth time the ban has been extended.
3. In the UK, the vaccination rate is slumping. Online portal Our World in Data shows six EU states have now fully inoculated a larger share of their total populations with a coronavirus vaccine than the UK. But there's good news for Indians travelling to the UK, India's alert level has been moved down from 'red' to 'amber'.
4. In Singapore, about 70% of the population has been fully vaccinated and the country is starting to ease social distancing restrictions.
5. Meanwhile, Israel is considering lowering the minimum age for a third dose of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to 40 or 50 from the current 60 years. Israel has been allowing immunocompromised residents, at-risk children, and those 60 and over to get booster shots.
