A sitting Member of Parliament, Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s Kavitha Maloth and her associate have been sentenced to 6 months of imprisonment on charges of bribing voters during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The court also imposed a fine of ₹ 10,000 on both.
They have been granted bail in the matter and the MP said that she will appeal the conviction in the high court.
The TRS MP and her associate Shaukat Ali were convicted by a special sessions court set up in March 2018 for expediting trials of lawmakers.
The Election Commission caught Ali distributing money among residents, in return for votes for Maloth in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district during the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
Ali confessed to the crime and is the first accused in the case.
