Even one alcoholic drink a day may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation, a new study published in the European Heart Journal claims.
The study says, a drink a day was linked to 16% enhanced risk of atrial fibrillation over a follow-up span of 14 years, when compared to none.
The commonly said phrase 'one glass of wine a day' to protect the heart should not be recommended without weighing the risks and benefits, the study said.
Information of over 1 lakh respondents was analysed between 1982 and 2010 for the study. Atrial fibrillation is the medical term given to an irregular and rapid heart rate.
