Former actor Zaira Wasim, who won a National Award for her performance in ‘Dangal’, has come out in support of a woman’s choice to wear a hijab. She responded to a Twitter user who shared a post showing a woman eating food without removing her niqab, captioned: ‘Is this a choice of a human being?’
Zaira said she attended a wedding recently and ate exactly like that. She said it was purely her choice even though people around her kept nagging her to take the niqab off. Zaira tweeted, ‘We don’t do it for you. Deal with it.’
Previously, Zaira commented on the hijab row and said that it was an injustice to ban it. She stated she ‘resisted’ the entire system where women are being harassed for merely carrying out a religious commitment. She said that she wears the hijab with ‘gratitude’ and humility.
Zaira Wasim left the film industry in 2019 saying that the profession was at odds with her faith. In a post on her Facebook page, Zaira said she realised ‘though I may fit here perfectly, I do not belong here’.
Zaira Wasim was last seen in Shonali Bose’s film ‘The Sky is Pink’, which also starred Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Farhan Akhtar. She also appeared in the lead role in Advait Chandan’s blockbuster hit film ‘Secret Superstar’ (2017).
