Mumbai, Aug 7 (PTI) Streaming giant Netflix has stirred excitement with the announcement of "Inspector Zende," a thrilling crime drama led by stalwarts Manoj Bajpayee and Jim Sarbh.

The platform revealed that the film, which draws inspiration from real events, is set to stream from September 5.

Transporting audiences to the lively alleys of Mumbai during the 1970s and 1980s, "Inspector Zende" narrates the gripping tale of a resolute police officer and the notorious "Swimsuit Killer" who daringly escapes Tihar Jail in New Delhi. This exhilarating pursuit promises a unique mix of crime, comedy, and nostalgia.

Bajpayee dons the role of Inspector Madhukar Zende, while Sarbh captures the charm and menace of the infamous “Swimsuit Killer,” Carl Bhojraj.

The character appears to pay homage to the infamous serial killer Charles Sobhraj, known as the “Bikini Killer,” who famously escaped from Tihar Jail in 1986.

Sobhraj's escapades were recently depicted by actor Sidhant Gupta in Vikramaditya Motwane's series "Black Warrant."

"Inspector Zende," marking Chinmay D Mandlekar's Hindi directorial debut, also casts acclaimed actors Bhalchandra Kadam, Sachin Khedekar, Girija Oak, and Harish Dudhade in crucial roles.

Produced by Jay Shewakramani and "Tanhaji" director Om Raut under Northern Lights Films, the project is heralded as an homage to vintage police methods and innovative justice.

Raut shared, "The story of 'Inspector Zende' is one to be revered and remembered. It is a captivating chase, entertaining and inspiring, fulfilling my father's dream of showcasing 'Inspector Zende’. Collaborating with Netflix to bring this film to life has been extraordinary."

Shewakramani expressed, “With Netflix’s backing for distinctive, true-spirited narratives and their expansive reach, they are ideal partners for this film. We eagerly await the audience's reaction to this unforgettable character.”

Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, director of Original Films at Netflix India, remarked that the film offers a novel twist on the traditional cop-criminal story.

“'Inspector Zende' breaks conventional bounds by seamlessly integrating humor and crime to deliver a genuine surprise.

At Netflix, we’re constantly drawn to tales celebrating grassroots heroes and triumphs ingrained in our cultural essence,” she stated.
