Venice, Aug 28 (AP) – Highlights from the Venice Film Festival

This year’s Venice Film Festival promises a star-studded affair with George Clooney and Emma Stone headlining two of the evening's premiering films, scheduled for Thursday. Clooney takes on the role of a renowned actor embarking on a profound soul-searching journey, while Stone assumes the role of a pharmaceutical company CEO in two major films highlighted at the event.

Joining them on the red carpet are notable Hollywood names such as Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, and Jesse Plemons. They are present for the world premieres of Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly” and Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Bugonia”. Both films are strong contenders for the prestigious Golden Lion award, which often serves as a precursor to Oscar nominations and victories.

Yorgos Lanthimos, familiar with the festival's accolades, recently seized the top honor with “Poor Things”, which garnered several Oscars, including best actress for Emma Stone. His latest venture “Bugonia” is an English-language adaptation of a South Korean film. It delves into the tale of two conspiracy theorists, played by Jesse Plemons among others, who suspect Stone’s character of being an extraterrestrial and consequently abduct her.

Noah Baumbach, having recently presented “White Noise” at the festival, offers “Jay Kelly” this time, a reflective narrative about a man's life choices, triumphs, and blunders. The film, featuring a robust ensemble cast, includes Adam Sandler as the actor's manager along with Greta Gerwig, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, and Riley Keough. Similar to “White Noise”, this new piece is a Netflix undertaking. After a hiatus, the streaming platform returns to Venice with three strong contenders in the competition, among which are Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and Kathryn Bigelow’s political thriller “A House of Dynamite”.

The 82nd Venice Film Festival inaugurated on Wednesday at the Lido and will continue until September 6.
