Sunjay Kapur, prominent industrialist and former husband of actor Karisma Kapoor, passed away due to a sudden heart attack while playing polo in the UK. He was 53.
Sunjay is survived by his wife Priya Sachdev and their child, in addition to his two children from his earlier marriage with Karisma Kapoor.
Kapur, who was the chairman of Sona Comstar, a leading Indian automotive technology company, also held the position of chairman for the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Northern Region.
His recent role aimed to drive industrial development across seven states and three Union territories including Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The company confirmed his demise on X with an official statement.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Mr. Sunjay J Kapur, Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Sona Comstar, following a sudden heart attack in England, UK, on 12th June 2025, at the age of 53”, the statement read.
Actor and author Suhel Seth also took to social media to share a condolence message, joining others in mourning the sudden loss.
Just hours before his death, Kapur had posted on social media expressing grief over the Air India plane crash that claimed over 200 lives on Thursday.
Sunjay Kapur married Karisma Kapoor in 2003. After years of discord, the couple decided to part ways and officially divorced in June 2016.
Their separation process began in 2005, with the Delhi High Court at one point urging both parties to seek a mutual settlement.
Karisma moved to Mumbai in 2010, shortly before the birth of their son Kiaan. In 2014, they jointly filed for divorce, ending their over-decade-long marriage.
